  2. Smoking

Smoking is associated with hypertension when it is chronic and heavy (Primatesta et al, 2001). It had been shown that there is an acute rise in blood pressure after smoking one cigarette in chronic smokers and non smokers (Azra Mahmud, John Feely, 2002). A study among older women found that age-adjusted risk of hypertension is lowest in those who had never smoke as compared to those associated with smoking (Folsom, Prineas et al. 1990). However the same study found that the age-adjusted risk is higher for ex-smoker group compared to current smoker group (Folsom, Prineas et al. 1990). It has shown that after one week of smoking cessation there was significant reduction in blood pressure level. (Junichi Minami; Toshihiko Ishimitsu; Hiroaki Matsuoka 1999). Extensive observation data shows that smoking has a graded adverse effect on the risk of cardiovascular complications (Doll et al, 1994) And considerable reductions in the risk of cardiovascular diseases occur immediately after the discontinuation of cigarette smoking.
